Healthcare
Access to health care services and insurance coverage
is essential to all people. For individuals with
disabilities and chronic health care needs who wish to
be gainfully employed, this is an especially critical
area. From its inception, Rhodes to Independence has
been committed to addressing medical care gaps and
barriers for this population. The passage of the
Sherlock Plan – the "Medicaid Buy-In" - for eligible
workers with disabilities was in part brought about
through Rhodes to Independence leadership. Our Executive Director and Advisory Board members participate in
health-care related initiatives around the state, such
as the Perry-Sullivan long-term care reform workgroups.
Research provides the basis for policy development
regarding people with chronic conditions as well as
improving health care access and quality. The continued
analysis of the Rhode Island Medicare/Medicaid linked
data base and initiation of other research activities
are tools that will ultimately provide a basis for
future strategies to bridge gaps and reduce barriers for
people with disabilities to access health care.
