Housing

Without a home, it is almost impossible for any person to keep a job. There is an established need to remove barriers preventing people with disabilities from residing in the community, improve capacity and access to affordable and accessible housing that is coordinated with long-term care support, and provide support in navigation of the housing system.

Since 2004, Rhodes to Independence has been committed to constructing sustainable system changes that will remove barriers preventing people with disabilities of all ages from residing in the community or in the housing arrangement of their choice.

Transportation

Accessible transportation, public or private, that can reliably take a worker with disabilities to and from work every work day is just not readily available in Rhode Island. This continues to be a major barrier to independence and employment. To address this issue, Rhodes to Independence has worked since 2003 to brainstorm strategies to enhance existing transportation options and services in support of people with disabilities who are employed and those who would like to work, and to explore innovative programs that have been implemented elsewhere and might be duplicated in Rhode Island.
